Early Specialization vs. Multisport: What Research Says

What complicates the picture is the club-club-calendar: showcase tournaments and year-round leagues create visibility that high-school seasons do not, which is why families feel pressured to specialize for exposure rather than development.

What should an off-season actually look like?

The pediatric literature describes an off-season as time away from the main sport's organized structure — not time on the couch and not a second sport practiced with the same intensity. A workable shape, aligned with the AAP's general guidance: at least two to four weeks fully unstructured after the season ends, then two or three months of different activity — another sport, unstructured play, general strength and movement — before the main sport's next cycle begins. Rest matters even when the child insists they feel fine; young athletes report enjoying more things when the calendar lets them, and enjoyment is the strongest predictor of staying in sport at all.
